Book Club

When:  Jul 21, 2020 from 06:00 PM to 07:00 PM (CT)
Associated with  Dallas Fort Worth Area Chapter

Sandra Foreman, a wife, mother, and lawyer, founded The Spa in Me, L.L.C., after recovering from a period of career burnout and exhaustion. She made changes to her busy lifestyle and chose activities that helped her to slow down, quiet her mind, and spend more time outdoors. After receiving requests from others who wanted to make similar lifestyle changes, she founded her company by offering day-long retreats and organizing book clubs.

Sandra Foreman welcomes the DFW IMA Chapter to join her from July 21, 2020 – September 22, 2020, in a specially curated book club experience. Through reading and cooking from carefully chosen books, her hope is that you will learn how to better manage stress and fatigue, while also nurturing your bodies with delicious food prepared in the comfort of your home. The virtual meeting schedule is as follows:

Time: 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Kickoff Meeting – July 21, 2020

Reading Discussion 1: August 4, 2020

Reading Discussion 2: August 20, 2020

Reading Discussion 3: September 18, 2020

Reading Discussion 4: September 25, 2020

Participants will read Do Nothing: How to Break Away from Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving by Celeste Headlee, and cook from Jubilee: Recipes from Two Centuries of African American Cooking by Toni Tipton-Martin.

After examining history, long-held assumptions about how we should use our time, and idleness, award-winning journalist Celeste Headlee finds that the work habits we cling to are harmful. Do Nothing proposes changes to the way we think about work in order to return to a life that does not sabotage our well-being.

In Jubilee, Toni Tipton-Martin presents recipes, with historical information, that showcase and celebrate the roots and mastery of African American cooking from enslaved chefs, to middle-and upper-class writers, and entrepreneurs.

Book club participants will receive a suggested reading schedule and discussion questions for Do Nothing. We will meet online through video-conferencing during various stages of our reading.

For Jubilee, participants are asked to cook at least four recipes and to post photos of their food in the DFW IMA Chapter Facebook Group.

To supplement the information learned through reading and cooking, Sandra Foreman invites participants to subscribe to The Spa in Me Newsletter at https://thespainme.substack.com/. This publication includes The Feel Goods edition released Monday through Friday. Topics include information about wellness destinations and tourism, self-care rituals to easily practice at home; do it yourself skin care recipes; poetry; uplifting songs, and more.
